Naiyue Zhang
Bachelor of Arts and Painting at Southwest University and MA in Fine Art at Chelsea College of Arts, University of the Arts London. Zhang's practice revolves around narratives and intangible entities, constructing fictional stories outside the patriarchal discourse within the interstices of time and space.
Art in the Confrontation between Myth and Contemporaneity.
“I am keen to deconstruct and reinterpret traditional mythological stories, explore their hidden meanings, and relate them to contemporary social and environmental issues”.
Zhang’s practice spans moving images, photography, sound, poetry, and sculpture. She positions her creations outside the traditional gallery space, seeking connections with nature, mysticism, and healing in places like forests and rivers. Zhang frequently engages with the histories, myths, and customs of specific regions, presenting them poetically while capturing sensory experiences through field recordings.
Her work is deeply invested in pre-patriarchal myths, plant decolonization, and post-human perspectives. She seeks to reinterpret and deconstruct traditional mythological narratives, relating them to contemporary social and environmental concerns. The concept of plant decolonization leads her to explore humanity’s predatory relationship with nature and to return to a de-anthropocentric worldview. Through her symbolic representations and metaphors, she invites viewers to reimagine the world from the perspective of non-human entities, weaving together an artistic practice that engages with the politics of ecology and spirituality.
